I did not like this film and i do not recommend seeing this film in the theaters. The film was absolutely stunning visually and it was a true fiest for my eyes, unfortunately it had no emotion and i could not relate to the characters or the situations in the film. Because there was no emotion behind the actions, the film became pointless and boring, I truly did not care what will happen to the women and could not wait for the film to be over. i was very dissappointed in this film, i have read the book that the film was based on and i was expecting much more. Overall, i was bored throughout the film and i feel like I have wasted my money.

Note: Here I rate the theater and not the movie.

Wayne Wang parallels the bonds between two pairs of lao tong friends-for-life, one couple in the 18th Century and their modern counterparts, in this adaptation of the novel by Lisa See.

One pair communicates with each other across the distance through a secret women’s language called nu shu. Yes, such couples, called lao tong, in Hunan actually used this language. The film compares the travails of the four women through their relationships past and present with anachronism and symbolism, such as contrasting the physical pain of foot-binding and the emotional pain that comes with the bindings of lao tong. Though slow at times, the movie delivers emotional appeal in situations with which women across the globe may identify. We see the superior acting, cinematography, and directing we now expect in Chinese drama. Will I give a numerical rating? No, but given a choice between typical Hollywood (oh no! still another pirate movie!) and this movie, I’d choose “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.”

What a sad film and not particulary good film either. I thought it is going to be close to the book but it was not at all. It was very weird to see Hugh Jackman as a bad guy and he was not very believable in his role. I thought that the film was to sappy and kind of felt like a bad soap opera. The film has major narrative problems and it was hard to overcome those and the constant transitions from past to present was tiresome and a bit confusing. Overall, I did not like this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters.

This is a drama directed by Wayne Wang and starring Bingbing Li, Gianna Jun and Vivian Wu. This movie is based on Lisa See's novel "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.", I was really excited to see this film because I have read the book and it was absolutely amazing. However, the film was nothing like the book and I do not know why it claims to be based on the book, there are only minor details that resemble the story in the book. That made me pretty angry and I felt cheated, the filmmakers should have said somewhere that the film is very loosely based on the novel. The film was not good and i did not like that they tried to make it a Hollywood film. Overall, I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters.
